Concept: land mark.. represents Durham neighbor's communication

CBI wants to make this area that not only funiture showroom but also Durham neighbor's community place. They want to get together with neighbors and provide some entertaining element to make energetic business or vigor life. They want to be a clear land mark.It will be ambious project.

Circulation: E. Chapel hill st. is a long and narrow road that leads to downtowm of Durham. It has only two lanes to each way. Also, there is small knoll with one way to E. Chapel hill st. which is located beside the building.

Site context: This building is located on corner. Facing north side, there is a main post office in front of the building and 6 stories parking desk on the right side. Easy to access to the building and people can recognize it easily if the building has attractive foctors. Generally, it has good opportunity to have lots of attention.

Lighting and color: This building was built by brick with red color. some part of them applied new color but still looks old. On the basement, There were several eletric bulb but they could not light enough to the each corner. 1st floor was pretty dark even it was in the morning. It seemed barely sunlight came from outside. Furthermore, height also too low. It could make people feel tight 2nd floor was quiet big enough and got sunshine through large windows. It seemed that 2nd floor does not need any bulb. It was bright enough.. It was contrast with 1st floor.

Interior finishes: Most interior finishes are bricks on the wall and concrete on the floor as finishes. Many bricks make the building very old but solid.

HVAC/ service: Most pipes and HVAC were exposed directly, some of them just put on the floor. most of them seemed like need to replace.

Remodeling this building is little bit challenge because it should be preserved like history. It shows how Durham people lived or how they build in those period. Without exterior changing, become a showroom and new community area means, interior should be unique like combination of old and new. Also, it has specific attract element to stand for land mark.
